Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) is pleased to announce Ma3azef as the recipient of the first FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant following an international open call aimed at artists, writers, collectives and independent publishing houses working with art publications and printed matter. With the support of the 2019 FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant of $30,000, Ma3azef, currently a digital resource, will publish a series of print publications in collaboration with Beirut-based design studio SHFRA, including a quarterly print magazine in Arabic which will be distributed through bookshops and art spaces across the MENA region and internationally.

Ma3azef is an online music magazine dedicated to the critique and analysis of contemporary Arabic music. Since its launch in 2012, Ma3azef has sought to develop independent critical discourse in Arabic and produce studied, bold and incisive long-form content. Ma3azef has worked on re-establishing high-quality print content in Arabic as well as facilitating accessibility to a wider range of readers. Ma3azef’s new print publications supported by the FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant will feature critical reviews, a distinct design, and new practices in print distribution and cross-pollination with Ma3azef's digital platforms.

FOCAL POINT, Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual art book fair, presents a broad selection of printed matter. This year’s iteration takes place from 14 to 16 November in Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square, and features regional and international artists and publishers presenting their content individually or within curated sections. As part of the broader presentation, this year’s content will include a special focus on zines and comics.
