Overview

Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) will present Vantage Point Sharjah 2, an exhibition featuring photographs by UAE residents centred on the theme of portraits and people. This exhibition is the second iteration of one of Sharjah Art Foundation’s initiatives focused on public programming and community outreach to encourage people living and working in the UAE to participate in SAF’s activities. The aim of the programme is to foster the development of local photographers and encourage engagement with the cultural community in the Emirates by presenting a broad selection of works. The opening reception will take place on August 30, 2014 at 6.30pm in Building GH at SAFʼs art spaces in Al Mureijah.

183 photographs by 48 participants were selected from an Open Call that invited UAE-based photographers to submit work for possible inclusion in this group exhibition. More than 70 submissions were received from photographers, artists and students.

Film Programme

Following the opening of Vantage Point Sharjah 2 will be a film screening of the feature-length documentary film Flying Paper by Nitin Sawhney and Roger Hill. Free and open to the public, the screening will take place at 8.30pm in Building P at SAFʼs art spaces in Al Mureijah. Flying Paper is the uplifting story of Palestinian children in Gaza engaged in the culture of kite making and flying.

The film follows Musa, a teenaged kite-maker in the village of Seifa, and Abeer a young journalist in the Jabalya refugee camp. They join thousands of other children to shatter the Guinness World Record for the most kites ever flown.

Our education and public programmes focus on building recognition of the central role art can play in the life of a community by promoting public learning and a participatory approach to art. All our events are free and open to the public. Sharjah Art Foundation is funded by the Department of Culture and Information, Government of Sharjah.
