Overview

Sharjah Art Foundation organises talks and training sessions to help those who work with people with disabilities to understand different types of physical, learning and developmental difficulties and become familiar with effective ways to offer support. Activities vary from training in particular disabilities and ways to work with people who have them to discussions about the experiences of people with disabilities and related social and environmental issues.

  • Current Programme

    Winter 2020

    The Winter 2020 Talks and Training Programme for People with Disabilities includes a training session about hearing impairment and sign language and a talk to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day.

    Strategies for Communicating with People with Hearing Impairment
    Training Session

    Date: Saturday, 22 February 2020
    Timings: 4:00 pm–7:00 pm
    Location: Art for All Centre
    Ages: All Ages
    Language: Arabic

    In this training session, participants will be introduced to the concept of hearing impairment and its characteristics. They will gain an understanding of the basic principles of sign language and learn how to sign numbers, letters of the alphabet and commonly used phrases. After the session, they will engage in simple conversations in Arabic or English.

    Understanding Down Syndrome
    Talk

    Date: Sunday, 22 March 2020
    Timings: 10:00 am–1:00 pm
    Location: Meeting Point-Sharjah Corniche
    Ages: All Ages
    Languages: English and Arabic

    To mark World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March, participants will participate in a walk, organised by Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with Sharjah Police Department, to observe World Down Syndrome Day. The walk will be followed by a talk where participants engage in a discussion about the condition. The session will include people with Down syndrome, who will talk about their experiences, challenges and achievements, as well as a number of experts who have dealt with and researched the genetic disorder.

    All sessions in the Programme for People with Disabilities are free and open to the public. Materials are provided by the Foundation.

    The Autumn 2019 Education Programme for People with Disabilities, scheduled from 21 September to 21 November, includes a wide range of educational offerings for individuals with physical, learning and developmental difficulties. The workshops are designed to help people with disabilities aged 3 and above to discover new ways of self-expression through art. All workshops are facilitated by experienced professionals, and sessions are conducted in English and Arabic, according to the needs of the participants.

    Sharjah Art Foundation is committed to making its programmes as inclusive and accessible as possible. Disability access symbols are included in all Education Programme descriptions to indicate the accessibility of individual sessions.

    The Summer 2018 Disabilities Education Programme, scheduled from 5 July to 16 August, includes a wide range of educational offerings for individuals with physical, learning and developmental difficulties to help them discover new ways of self-expression through art. Designed for participants ranging from 7 to 30 years of age, all workshops are facilitated by experienced professionals.
