Travel Sketchbook workshop, Sharjah, 2016

Workshop Description

Inspired by the site-specific art installations in Sharjah Biennial 14, this workshop explores the concept of site-specificity in art practice and how artists and curators can draw on place and specific environments to shape a piece of artwork.

Using a case study of SB14 artist Alaa Edris's The Black Boxes of Observational Activity (2019), this workshop examines the process of developing a work for a site-specific installation. It also studies the discursive aspects of site-specificity, asking a number of questions. What is meant by the term ‘site’? Does it refer to geography, community or the transient experience created by a work and viewers’ interactions with it? How can site-specific works be documented?

This workshop will begin with a tour by Alaa Edris of her site-specific installation The Black Boxes of Observational Activity (2019).

Tour Meeting Point

Participants are asked to assemble at the Information Centre in Al Mureijah Square for the tour, which will be followed by the workshop in the Art for All Center.
