Overview

Sharjah Art Foundation invites you, your family and friends to join us on Friday, 8 January 2021, in Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square, for the next edition of Fridays at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, a weekly series of workshops designed for adults and children of all ages and abilities.

Come sketch the sights and sounds of the heritage area around Bait Al Shamsi, learn light painting techniques, make your own zine, paint on tiles, sew your own face mask and write a letter to yourself.

This event is free and open to the public.

Workshops

Zine Making
Workshop for Youth and Adults

Date: Friday, 8 January 2021
Timings: 4:00 pm–6:00 pm
Location: Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square
Ages: 16+
Languages: English and Arabic

Zine art can consist of photos, clipart, drawings or collages. As zines are personal projects, experience in creating art objects is not required. In this workshop, participants will draw on the wide resources available to them to create their own zines.

Live Sketching
Workshop for Youth and Adults

Date: Friday, 8 January 2021
Timings: 4:00 pm–6:00 pm
Location: Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square
Ages: 15+
Languages: Arabic and English

In this workshop, participants will gather at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, where the learning team will introduce them to some basic principles of sketching. They will then explore the area around Bait Obaid Al Shamsi and sketch different elements of the heritage house.

Sew Your Own Face Mask
Workshop for Children and Families

Date: Friday, 8 January 2021
Timings: 4:00 pm–6:00 pm

Participants will learn how to make their own cloth face mask using leftover fabric. They will measure and cut the fabric, and then they will create the mask, either sewing it by hand or using a sewing machine.

Tile Art
Workshop for Children and Families

Date: Friday, 8 January 2021
Timings: 5:00 pm–7:00 pm
Location: Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square

Languages: Arabic and English

In this workshop, participants will learn an alcohol-inking technique for making tile art. First, they will paint directly onto ceramic tiles, creating different colour combinations and designs. After they finish painting, they will add small drops of rubbing alcohol to the surface of the tiles to reveal abstract and clouded images.

Letter to Self
Workshop for Youth and Adults

Ages: 16+

In this group writing workshop, participants will discuss a range of issues with each other and engage in self-reflection. Then they will create a monologue in the form of a letter to themselves.

Light Painting Photography
Workshop for Children and Families

Date: Friday, 8 January 2021
Timings: 6:00 pm–8:00 pm
Location: Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Arts Square
Ages: 9–15
Languages: English and Arabic

This workshop will introduce participants to the form of art photography known as light painting. Working in a dark space, they will use handheld artificial lights to paint in the air while the shutter of a camera is left open for a long exposure time. The resulting photographic images will capture patterns and streaks made with the lights.

Safety Rules

To safeguard the health of our visitors and staff, the following rules, in line with Sharjah Health Authority regulations, will be instituted at the venue:

• Visitor capacity inside the venue will be limited to ensure adherence to recommended social distancing rules.
• Visitors are required to wear masks at all times in the venue.
• Visitors should keep a safe distance from others at all times.
• Visitors will be subject to temperature checks before entering the venue.
• Enhanced disinfection and sanitisation of the venue will take place between sessions.
• Hand sanitisers and other sanitisation products will be available at all venue entrances.
• These health and safety rules are subject to change in line with any modifications to Sharjah Government regulations and policies.
