In this course, participants will learn how to hold the oud with both hands and play one or two maqams [the system of melodic modes used in traditional Arabic music] in a simple song. They will also learn to avoid the common mistakes players make and advance their skills. The course will reflect on the different oud styles from Iraq, the Levant, Egypt, Turkey and the Gulf as well as techniques for making maqam transitions and using the risha [plectrum]. Participants in the advanced course should have been practising the oud for more than a year.
