Overview

AGRICULTURE LAB: An Introduction to Guerilla Gardening workshop took place on 16 July 2016 in the neighbourhoods surrounding Sharjah Art Foundation.

Guerilla gardening is a globally celebrated concept of gardening which combines place-making and nature. Introducing the community to this concept was a great way to teach participants how to garden in Sharjah’s urban and arid environment.
The workshop had two parts, firstly the concept of Guerilla gardening was introduced through a presentation of examples from around the world. Participants then proceeded to bag soil which they carried around, tie dye t-shirts using natural dyes extracted from SAF Urban Garden. They then set off through the neighbourhood and Souk area where they looked for suitable spots such as cracks and potholes to plant and water their seeds.

While much of the population living in the UAE come from tropical or greener regions of the world, gardening can be empowering and help them connect more closely to their environment.

Introduction to Guerilla Gardening was an initiative to build community spirit and help in creating a greener neighbourhood. The workshop helped raise awareness of the possibilities for the community to participate in the creation of a greener neighbourhood.
