Biography

Ammar Al Attar is a self-taught photographer and mixed media artist. He chronicles his surroundings and the contemporary landscape, going beyond mere documentation to engage with issues impacting the social fabric of the United Arab Emirates. His images provide a visual history of his rapidly globalising society to explore cultural continuity that is becoming increasingly elusive.

Al Attar’s exhibitions include Place I Call Home, British Council and FFotogallery (2019); Abu Dhabi Art (2018), Al Haraka Baraka, Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah (2016); Place And Unity, Abu Dhabi (2016); Shara Art Fair, Jeddah (2016); Emirati Expressions IV, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, Manarat Al Sadyiat, Abu Dhabi (2015); Emirati Insights, Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi (2015); Accented, Maraya Art Centre (2015); Annual Photography Show, Emirates Fine Arts Society, Sharjah (2015); Past Forward: Contemporary Arts From the Emirates, Washington DC (2014); The Other Me, Sharjah Art Museum (2014); Emirates Fine Arts Society Annual Exhibition, Sharjah Art Museum (2014); and Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013).

He has been awarded First Place in Installation, Emirates Fine Arts Society (2014); First Place in Emirates Photography Exhibition (2014), and was granted an Abu Dhabi Art Commission (2018). He has participated in the March Project Residency programme, Sharjah Art Foundation (2016) and Air Dubai, Art-in-Residence, Art Dubai and Delfina (2013).

Al Attar’s work can be found in the collections of Sharjah Art Foundation, Barjeel Art Foundation and Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Technology from the Higher College of Technology, Dubai (2003), and Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Wollongong Dubai (2008).

Al Attar was born in 1981 in Dubai. He currently lives in Ajman and works in Sharjah.
