Yaminay Chaudhri is a multimedia artist and co-founder of Tentative Collective (est. 2011), a gathering of artists, curators and teachers, as well as members from completely different backgrounds and class. based in Karachi that currently consists of three core members: Yaminay Chaudhri, Hajra Haider and Fazal Rizvi.
Tentative Collective works site specifically in response to Karachi. Interested in engaging with the specificities and commonalities of modernity in rapidly growing cities of the global south, the collective navigates through the precarious urban geographies, creating ephemeral moments in conversation with the city’s infrastructures.
Tentative Collective has participated in numerous shows internationally, including Missing, Manchester Art Gallery (2018); Cosmopolis #1: Collective Intelligence, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2017); Waste Agency, Akademie der Kunst, Berlin (2016); Digging Deep, Crossing Far, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin (2016); Ancestors: Architecture of Memory, Lahore Biennale Foundation (2015); Digital Marrakech 4 (2014) and Mera Karachi Mobile Cinema, Karachi (2012–2014).
Chaudhri earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University, Ithaca, US (2002) and a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Albany (2011). Born in 1979 in Karachi, she works in Karachi and lives between Karachi and New Haven, US.
