Biography

Writer Yasmine El Rashidi is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books and a contributing editor of the Middle East arts journal Bidoun. She is the author of Chronicle of a Last Summer: A Novel of Egypt (2017), which was long-listed for the PEN Open Book Award, and The Battle for Egypt: Dispatches from the Revolution (2011).

El Rashidi’s essays have been published in Artforum, Frieze, The New York Times, Lapham’s Quarterly and The Guardian, and her writing has been anthologised widely, including in Best American Nonrequired Reading (2014), The New York Review Abroad: Fifty Years of International Reportage (2013) and Diaries of an Unfinished Revolution: Voices from Tunis to Damascus (2013).

A former fellow of the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, El Rashidi is a contributing op-ed writer for The New York Times and is currently working on her second novel.

She was born 1977 in Cairo, where she continues to live and work.
