Biography

Born in Chicago in 1957, Doug Henders graduated with a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art in 1983 after a career, based in Germany, as a cartographer in the US Army.

Henders’s work relates strongly to his concept of contemporary painting as an expanded medium that can incorporate the technological attributes of screens, windows and interfaces. He approaches his practice as a new mapping template for an interactive, web-based view of nature, society and history. For the 9th Sharjah Biennial he presented a new series of six paintings titled Heavens Gate (2009), thematically linked as the ‘metaphysics of propaganda’.

Henders has been represented in solo and group exhibitions including the Sharjah Biennial (2009), the Boxing Hall, Munich, Germany (2008) and the Atilierfest, Berlin (2007). His work is in the permanent collection of the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Henders currently lives and works in New York.
