Biography

In Un cri dans le silence (2009), her two-part project for the 9th Sharjah Biennial, Elena Kovylina reconstructed 12 movie posters related to the French actress Brigitte Bardot, and then, in a related performance, re-enacted a scene from Bardot’s best-known film And God Created Woman (1956).

Her work has been shown in international exhibitions and screenings including at the Miami Dade College, Miami, USA (2010), Tirana Art Biennial, Tirana (2009), Sharjah Biennial (2009), Lulea Art Biennale, Sweden (2009), Moscow Biennial (2009, 2007), Helsinki Academy of Art Gallery, Finland (2008), Akademie der Kunste, Berlin (2008), Sydney Biennial (2006) and Prague Biennial (2005).


Kovylina studied at the Art Academy, Moscow (1993-95), the Art and Media School, Zurich, Switzerland (1996-98), the Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow (1998-1999), UdK Berlin (2001-03), and has undertaken residencies in Switzerland, France, Germany and the USA. Born in Moscow in 1971, she lives and works between Moscow and Paris.
