Biography

Russell Rickford is an associate professor of history at Cornell University. He specialises in African-American political culture after World War II, the Black Radical Tradition and transnational social movements.

His current book, We Are an African People: Independent Education, Black Power, and the Radical Imagination (Oxford University Press , 2016), received the Liberty Legacy Award from the Organisation of American Historians. Rickford’s scholarly articles have appeared in Journal of American History, Journal of African American History, Souls, New Labor Review, among other publications. His popular writing has appeared in publications such as In These Times, Truthout, Washington Post, Counterpunch, Black Agenda Report and Africa is a Country.

Rickford holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Howard University (1997) and a doctorate from Columbia University (2009).
