Biography

Three of her works were included in the 9th Sharjah Biennial: an installation of three marble sculptures titled After (2007-08), a series of photographs on canvas titled Afterimages (2007-08) and a large-scale sound installation titled (Shhhhhh…..) prelude (2009), created in collaboration with Brazilian composers O Grivo.

Valeska Soares has exhibited extensively throughout her career in both solo and group shows including at the University Museum of Contemporary Art, Mexico (2010), the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas (2010), Museu de Arte Contemporânea da USP, São Paulo, Brazil (2009), the Sharjah Biennial (2009), the San Juan Triennial, Puerto Rico (2009), the International Biennial of São Paulo (2008), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008). Her work is in the collections of the Tate, London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California, Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Inhotin, Brazil, and Centro De Arte Contemporánea, Malaga, Spain.

She received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University Santa Ursula, Rio de Janeiro (1987), followed by an MA from Pratt Institute, New York (1994), and a PhD in Arts, from NYU. Valeska Soares was born in 1957 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
