Overview

Through engaging excursions and workshops, the #SAFneighbourhood project reflects, celebrates and documents the narratives of people living and working in the area surrounding Sharjah Art Foundation. This project will culminate in a publication serving as an alternative guide to #SAFneighbourhood. Included in the publication will be narratives and artwork based on interviews, photographs and found objects from #SAFneighbourhood.

Participate

The Community Programme works with artists, designers and urban researchers on a number of projects in #SAFneighbourhood. One project is The Journal, a series of sketching workshops led by artist Rania Jishi.

Participants learn how to keep a journal and document different experiences around Sharjah using a variety of sketching techniques. Other projects have included two zine-making workshops, organised by Jaffat Al Aqlam around #SAFneighbourhood themes such as shop signs, foods, colours and textures. Khalid Mezaina has delivered a workshop that explored the digital designs found in Souq Saqr. Fikra Design Studio have given a talk on their research into the aesthetics and branding of local cafeterias. After the talk, participants joined an excursion to #SAFneighbourhood cafeterias to explore more layers of the research. Lamatna Youth Group and The Green Room have presented musical and poetry nights showcasing local talent.

As #SAFneighbourhood is an initiative activated by and for the community, we welcome your contributions and ideas on documenting neighbourhood narratives and organising new workshops. Please send an email to community@sharjahart.org to share your proposals.
