Overview

Karin Sander’s German National Women's Soccer Team 1:7,7 is a scaled-down exact replica of each member of the 2005 German national women’s soccer team. Sander used a 3D body scanner to record the exact forms of each person and recreated the figures with a machine that rendered the data, slice by slice, into miniature plastic figurines. Sander did not necessarily direct the outcome of each figurine as the poses were selected by their respective subjects.

Like her work Kugelbahn (Ball Valve), 2009, which was also exhibited in Sharjah Biennial 9, German National Women's Soccer Team 1:7,7 demonstrates Sander’s preoccupation with mapping and measuring and highlights her interest in the complex relationships between artworks, institutions, and audiences. Although produced through mechanical means, the figurines represent a direct transposition of the real world – the scientific means of production belies the emotive effect that these personalities can generate among their audience.

This project was part of Sharjah Biennial 9
