The Dialogue That Is Us

Artist Statement

Not long ago, text and image, the conceptual and the formal, were not two separate and irreconcilable entities: in Byzantine icons, emblem books and allegories, text and image work as one, and are treated as one.

Building upon this tradition, The Conversation That Is Us juxtaposes images, some from the history of art, with short texts written from the perspective of someone living in Beirut. Historical periods and geographical regions are brought together to become allegories of the here and now, in a failed attempt to create meaning out of the world that surrounds us.
