Nici Cumpston

Nici Cumpston OAM (b. 1963, Auckland) is a Barkandji artist, curator and writer. In 2008, she was appointed as the inaugural curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), Adelaide, where she helped develop 16 major exhibitions, working with hundreds of artists and producing an accompanying catalogue for each show. Since 2013, she has served as Artistic Director of the Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, which supports artists from around the country to ambitiously create new works for major exhibitions at AGSA as well as across the city and state. Cumpston’s adopts a listening approach towards supporting artists’ visions and works, which she believes can profoundly empower people’s lives.
