Hassan Sharif was a pioneer of conceptual art and experimental practice, a prolific writer on art and a founder of several art institutions within the UAE. He often dealt with themes pertinent to modern society, such as time, mass production and consumer culture in society. A maximalist approach to everyday materials defines much of his practice. In Slippers and Wire (2009), he turned a disorganised pile of multicoloured plastic slippers into an expression of formal unity, reflecting on the accumulation of synthetic materials in daily life.
