Sonia Balassanian was born in Iran to parents of Armenian origin. Her obsession with Armenian poetry, script and the practice of writing began early on in life. These forms would emerge into her signature engagement with the artistic movement of Lyrical Abstraction. After studies in Philadelphia and New York, Balassanian’s voluminous visual vocabulary expanded to encompass myriad forms of architectural embodiment. Presented here is one of the artist’s signature palimpsest-like paintings from 1976, produced after working as an assistant to the famed architect Louis Kahn. Embedded within are rhythmic patterns.
