The Flying Saucer is a star-shaped structure that opened in 1978 as a French-inspired patisserie. The building went through a series of programmatic and physical transformations to accommodate its successive tenants—two supermarkets, a pharmacy and a fast-food restaurant.
The Flying Saucer was acquired by Sharjah Art Foundation in 2012 and has been used as an exhibition venue since 2015. It was recently renovated and reopened to the public on 26 September 2020. The building now features new exterior spaces as well as community gathering spaces which include a multi-activity café around a sunken courtyard with a library and multiple screening walls.
The renovation project, which began in 2018, continues the work started by the Foundation in 2015 to restore the building to its original silhouette. This intervention also includes new additions designed to complement the building spatially and support its function as a community hub and resource. Notable elements of its design include a circular dome that seems to hover above a ring of eight columns, a star-shaped canopy projecting beyond a panoramic façade and a bright interior space supported by V-shaped pillars.
This documentary recounts the history of the building, the renovation process, and the collective memory surrounding it and features interviews with various individuals who have had a relationship with the building.
