Abbas AlShajjar (b. 1967, Bahrain) is a fisherman and carpenter from Karbabad, a coastal village on the northern shore of Bahrain. His practice reflects a deep connection to marine ecologies and the knowledge systems they sustain. Descended from generations of fishermen, he began fishing independently at the age of 12, drawing on intergenerational knowledge rooted in an intimate relationship with the sea. AlShajjar contributes to a human-scale food system through the construction and maintenance of hadhras (traditional fixed fishing traps) and the use of qarqoor (portable fishing cages). He has helped in the construction of wooden shelters for local fishermen along the Bahraini shoreline. His collaborations include leading walks with artist Mariam M. Alnoaimi as part of It’s in the Water, It’s Everywhere? (2021), presented in the group exhibition Staple: What’s on Your Plate?, Hayy Jameel, Jeddah (2021–2022), and contributing to Alnoaimi’s video installation The Water that Asked for a Fish (2025).
