Albert L Refiti

Albert L Refiti (b. 1963, Samoa) is an academic and a researcher of Samoan Pacific material culture. He practiced architecture in Auckland (1990, 1994–2002) and London (1991–1993) before beginning his academic career at Auckland University of Technology (2002), where he is currently Professor of Art, Design and Material Culture. He works in critical studies research on spatial design and architectural environments in the Pacific, with a focus on the region’s ethnography. In 2012, he co-founded the Vā Moana Pacific Spaces Research Cluster, a leading research platform. By examining Indigenous Moana modes of producing space, objects, rituals and performance, the organisation’s far-reaching network of international researchers has transformed ways of thinking about contemporary and customary Pacific understandings of the world. Refiti is co-editor of the Handbook of Contemporary Indigenous Architecture (Springer, 2018) and Pacific Spaces: Translations and Transmutations (Berghahn, 2022).
