Avni Sethi

Avni Sethi (b. 1989, Ahmedabad, India) explores cultures of violence, memory, space and the body. She conceptualised and designed the Conflictorium: Museum of Conflict, Ahmedabad and Raipur (2013 and 2022, respectively), and Mehnat Manzil: Museum of Work, Ahmedabad (2019). She served as artistic director of the Conflictorium from 2013 to 2023. Sethi has written and spoken extensively on the role of small museums as spaces for social justice and the importance of care-based ecosystems. Trained in various dance idioms, she draws on syncretic faith traditions and contested narratives in her performances, exploring the relationship between intimate audiences and the performing body. She is currently nurturing Ordo Performance Collaboratory, a space for performance-based experimentation. Sethi was an artist-in-residence at Cemeti Institute of Art and Society, Yogyakarta, and a visiting fellow at The Saison Foundation, Tokyo (both 2024). She received the Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice (2020–2022) from the Vera List Centre for Art and Politics, New York.
