Bettina Ng’weno

Bettina Ng’weno (b. 1967, Nairobi) is an Associate Professor of African American and African Studies, University of California, Davis. She was previously co-director of the Mellon Research Initiative Reimagining Indian Ocean Worlds at the same university. She received a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (2003), an MA in Cultural Anthropology from Stanford University (1995) and BSc in Agricultural Science and Management from the University of California, Davis (1989). Her research and teaching interests include space, property, social justice, citizenship, cities, states, race and ethnicity within Latin America, Africa and the Indian Ocean region. Among her edited publications are Reimagining Indian Ocean Worlds (Routledge, 2020) and Developing Global Leaders: Insights from African Case Studies (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020). She has also written a number of journal articles, book chapters and online articles, and she directed and produced the film Last Dance in Kaloleni.
