Eiko Otake

Eiko Otake (b. 1952, Tokyo) is an artist, choreographer and performer based in New York since 1976. Her practice spans performance, media and activism, reflecting a deep engagement with place, memory and the politics of the body. For more than four decades, she has created original choreography with Takashi Koma Otake as part of the performance duo Eiko & Koma. Since 2014, she has developed independent projects. Her long-running series, ‘A Body in Places’, includes over 70 site-specific performances, while A Body in Fukushima documents her solo performances in post-nuclear disaster landscapes. Otake’s ‘Duet Project’ is an evolving series of cross-disciplinary collaborations with a range of artists. Her 10-year initiative, I Invited Myself, presents exhibitions and screenings of her media works. Otake also works in film; her co-directed documentary No Rule Is Our Rule has been screened at numerous film festivals. In 2025, she co-created What Is War with artist Wen Hui.
