Mere Boynton

Mere Boynton (b. 1966, Gisborne, Aotearoa New Zealand) is a composer, singer, actor and artistic director who blends classical singing with te reo Māori (Māori language). Born and raised in Te Tairāwhiti, her practice is grounded in Māori worldviews and performance traditions. Her recent work draws on waiata (song) by Māori composers that explore themes of wai (water), taiao (nature) and aroha (love). She has performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and in films such as The Piano (1993) and Untold Tales of Tūteremoana (2022), and she has collaborated with composers Gareth Farr and Jonathan Besser. She has also released the CDs Waikohu (2002) and Aroha Ahava (2015). Boynton has organised major festivals and Māori arts programmes, including Tāwhiri Festivals and Events and Te Papa Tongarewa. She earned two degrees in Māori studies from Victoria University of Wellington (1988, 1990) and trained in classical voice at Wellington Polytechnic (1991–1993).
