Muhannad Al Azzeh

Currently based in the Palestinian village of Kobar, Muhannad Al Azzeh is a visual artist from the Al Azzeh refugee camp. His work focuses on the carceral system, particularly through registers of time, the prisoner’s body and experiences of solitary confinement. It is informed by his own experience of being incarcerated in Israeli prisons for four and a half years, in addition to the twelve years he worked as a researcher and legal assistant for the Palestinian organisation Addameer, which supports Palestinian political prisoners incarcerated by both Israel and the Palestinian Authority. His sketches and illustrations therefore grapple with the multifaceted layers of imprisonment as well as the prisoner’s interiority. Al Azzeh is a candidate for an MA in Israeli Studies from Birzeit University, and he recently completed his studies in therapeutic practices through art-making.

Muhannad Al Azzeh participates in Sharjah Biennial 16 as part of Bilna'es' project curated by Adam HajYahia.
