Zawose Sisters

The Zawose Sisters are a music duo comprising Leah Ndahani Zawose and Grace Karima. Rooted in the rich musical heritage of Tanzania’s Gogo people, their work preserves and reinterprets ancestral rhythms through deep, resonant vocals and mastery of traditional instruments. Blending heritage with contemporary energy, their performances tell stories of youth, women and cultural resilience in central Tanzania. The sisters have performed both locally and internationally. Zawose is also a member of the Zawose Queen Band, a collective of daughters and granddaughters of the late musician Hukwe Zawose. The band continues his legacy and recently released its debut album, Maisha. Zawose and Karima have also participated in Hii ni Afrika, a musical theatre production, and are members of the Bahati Female Band, an ensemble dedicated to uplifting female musicians and promoting East African traditions.
