Akinbode Akinbiyi

Akinbiyi Akinbode primarily focuses on large, sprawling megacities in his photographic practice. Wandering highways and byways from place to place, he attempts to understand and deeply engage with the modern metropolis. The artist mainly walks and works in the four major African cities of Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa and Johannesburg, but he has also meandered throughout Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Dakar and Bamako, as well as cities in Europe and the Americas, recently including São Paulo and Chicago.
Akinbode adopts no one viewpoint or way of roaming. Instead, his work is open-ended and driven by a desire to delve as deeply as possible into the meaning and subjectivity of the everyday. He also works as a curator and has led photographic workshops internationally in Germany, Nigeria, Sudan, Sweden, England, the United States and Greece.
