Kaloki Nyamai

Known for his unique approach to storytelling, Kaloki Nyamai is an internationally acclaimed Kenyan painter who uses an intricate style of layering textures and materials to build utterly unique images. His large-form paintings centre around figurative motifs that capture the stories and heritage of his native Kamba community. The artist infuses his canvases with narrative and physical weight, and he explores the tradition of painting as a medium for storytelling through his compositions. Nyamai also invites the Kenyan language of Kikamba, his mother’s tribe, into each of his titles. His work has been showcased at prestigious events, such as the Stellenbosch Triennale in South Africa (2020), the Dakar Biennale (2022) and the Venice Biennale (2022). Recent exhibitions include Moments That I Miss (2022) and Dining in Chaos (2023) at Galerie Barbara Thumm in Berlin.
