Mahmoud Khaled (b. 1982) studied Fine Art at Alexandria University in Egypt, and he obtained his MFA from Trondheim University in Norway. His work spans video, photography, sculpture, installation, sound and text, and it explores identity and intimate dynamics, while questioning the larger structures that produce them. He has held solo exhibitions at Gypsum, Cairo; The Mosaic Rooms, London; Edith-Ruth-Haus, Oldenburg; Associação Cultural Videobrasil, São Paulo; and Contemporary Image Collective, Cairo. The artist has also participated in group shows at IMPAKT, Utrecht, Tallinn and Freiburg; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; Witte de With, Rotterdam; the 15th Istanbul Biennale; the 13th Sharjah Biennale; Centre Pompidou, Malaga; Whitechapel Gallery, London; and the Lofoten International Art Festival. Khaled was awarded the Videobrasil in Context prize (2012) and was shortlisted for the 2016 Abraaj Art Prize. He received the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship (2020) and was awarded the Frieze Focus Stand Prize in London (2022). He is based in Berlin and Cairo.
