María José Murillo (b. 1989, Arequipa, Peru) is a fibre artist, researcher and cultural worker dedicated to cultivating and reclaiming her Andean textile heritage, which has been historically excluded from Peruvian art schools. She holds an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in Painting from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Through weaving, Murillo bridges ancestral traditions with modern techniques to explore her heterogeneous cultural identity and enter into a relationship with her ancestors. In 2019, she returned to Peru to lead the Education Department at the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco. She later co-founded the art collective Noqanchis alongside renowned Andean weavers. In 2022, she joined the WIELS contemporary art residency in Brussels, and she currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Textile Society of America. She participated in the Recherches 2024 residency at the Musée de la Tapisserie et des Arts Textiles in Tournai, Belgium.
