Nge Lay

Nge Lay (b. 1979, Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar) is a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Paris. She is pursuing a master’s diploma at the École des Beaux-Arts, following her BA in Fine Art Painting (2003) and BA in Economics (2004) from National University of Art and Culture, Yangon. Her practice encompasses performance art, installation, sculpture and photography, with a focus on Myanmar’s societal issues, historical contexts and self-referential themes. Central to the artist’s work is the issue of rural education, and she engages in art projects with schools in her husband’s village Thuye'dan. Lay has exhibited internationally in France, the United States, Japan, Singapore and Myanmar, with highlights including Dislocations, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2024); autohistorias, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille (2024); Venice Meeting Point, Venice (2024); documenta fifteen (2022); and the Asia Pacific Triennial (APT8) (2016). In addition, she co-organises the Thuye’dan Village Art Project, and she has been a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2011, 2020).
