Rully Shabara

Rully Shabara (b. 1982, Palu, Indonesia) is dedicated to exploring the human voice as a medium as well as language as an experimental subject. For more than two decades, he has initiated numerous concept-based projects centred on voice and conducted global workshops focusing on primal expression and improvisation. As the vocalist for the Indonesian avant-garde duo SENYAWA, he has also created the speculative language-driven culture KHAWAGAKA, the AI-backed digital entity XHABARABOT and the improvisation-based choir system RAUNG JAGAT. Shabara co-founded KOMBO LAB, Indonesia’s first platform for free improvised music, and he serves as a mentor for Berlin’s Forecast 7. He has collaborated with notable musicians, including Keiji Haino, Stephen O’Malley and Hildur Guðnadóttir. Also, the artist has performed at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center and festivals like Primavera, and his work has been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Quietus and The Wire.
