Salima Hakim

Salima Hakim (b. 1978, Jakarta) is a visual artist and lecturer specialising in embroidery and hand-stitched fabrics. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design (2005) and a master’s in Cultural Studies from Universitas Indonesia (2010). Currently, Hakim teaches art history at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara–Tangerang. Her art employs a historical descriptive approach, addressing gender representation in history and archaeology through stitching as both technique and metaphor. Hakim’s work merges scientific and fictional data to explore gender and construct imagined historical narratives from a female perspective. Fascinated by ancient art and indigenous cultures, she founded Untel2an, a free art history class, in 2016. Her exhibitions include Rusuh Resah, D Gallerie, Jakarta (2014); Jogja ArtWeeks, PKKH UGM, Yogyakarta (2015); The House of the Unsilenced, Cemara 6 Gallery, Jakarta (2017); and Biennale Jogja XVI Ekuator #6, Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta (2021). She co-produced Ahasveros, an award-winning animated short film, in 2021.
