Having studied photography at the Berlin University of the Arts, Sangdon Kim (b. 1971, Seoul) uses photography, sculpture, installation and video to give form to in-between beings and phenomena that often go unnoticed in Korean society. His works, such as Bulgwang-dong Totem (2010) and Solveig’s Song (2011), visualise the fantasies innate in everyday life. Kim is especially interested in discovering the geopolitical aspects of society and conducting an ‘emotive survey’ into them. The artist has received accolades, including the Hermès Foundation Missulsang (2011), the Daum Prize (2012) and the Doosan Yonkang Arts Awards (2012).
