Visual Cultural Theory: Thinking About Images

With Tina Sherwell

Ages 18+

In English

This three-day course will address methodologies of visual literacy and image analysis. Participants will explore a wide range of examples from contemporary popular culture and visual art to understand how questions of visual expression operate and translate in different contexts and how images and artworks are read by viewers. Participants will study the language of visual culture theory and examine the work of key thinkers such as John Berger, W.j.T Mitchell, Nicholas Mirzeoff, Jean Fisher and Stuart Hall.

Through interactive discussion, the seminar will provide participants with key tools for thinking about images and interpreting art works. The seminar will also help them improve their understanding of the mechanisms of visual referencing and signifying practices as well as the importance of haptic visualisation and reminiscence.

This session is free, and all materials are provided by Sharjah Art Foundation.
