Overview

This presentation will explore the role of and relationship between artists and institutions in the process of commissioning work that is part of sustainable community development. Issues addressed will be the need for artists, architects and designers to understand the fundamental cultural and aesthetic traditions and heritage of the sites in which they are working, as well as the necessity for institutions to create opportunities for engagement between artists and communities through the commissioning process. The goal of this process should be the enhancement of communities through cultural developments that promote a sense of identity, purpose and well-being.
