Overview
There is an informal, naive quality to the photographs from Rika Noguchi’s series In the Desert. Like snapshots, these images seem accidental, as if witness to an unremarkable event or a fleeting experience that ultimately escaped the photographer’s attempt to capture it.
Noguchi shows us the desert photographed without artifice, the expanses of sand and camels alongside the functional and mundane structures symptomatic of human habitation and domesticity. We are left with man and his effect on the desert landscape, a simple truth that is so often the subject of nostalgic and romantic portrayal.
