Overview

Clean City traces the social, philosophical and political connotations of 'cleanliness' and 'purity' within a contemporary Greek ethos. Who cleans Athens? Why are the majority of cleaners women and immigrants? Why does the phrase 'a clean sweep' describe police operations intended to rid public spaces of 'undesirable' figures (immigrants, the homeless, 'deviants')? As theatre of the real, this performance presents a Greek narrative as told from the perspective of foreigners. In a candid and humorous fashion, immigrant women living in Athens and working as cleaners take the stage and relate personal accounts to challenge stereotypes and expose an undisguised return to racist discourse.
Clean City is made possible by the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens (co-producer and touring supporter) and the EUROPOLY project (co-producer).
