Biography

CJ Clarke is a visual artist and author of Magic Party Place, a book documenting contemporary England and mapping the roots of Brexit in the process. The book was shortlisted for the Arles Authors Book Award (2017), Photo Espana Book of the Year (2017) and Aperture Paris Photo First Book Award (2016). Clarke is currently collaborating with the filmmaker Christopher Smith on the multi-screen and projection installation Magic Party Place (Dreaming of a New Town Utopia), a version of which was first shown at the FORMAT Photography Festival. A participant in various films and projects, he has received the inaugural BJP/Canon Open Shutter Award, Ian Parry Award, Observer Hodge Award and Magenta Flash Forward Award. He is co-founder of the crowd-sourced activist initiative The Rape in India Project as well as co-founder and director of Just Another Photo Festival, a guerrilla festival that democratises visual media by taking photography to the people and forging new audiences.
