Biography

Jason Tamiru is a member of the Yorta Yorta community. As a festival and theatre producer, he has been invested in building frameworks that support and complement his people’s cultural creativity and expression. He has worked with many of Melbourne’s most iconic performing arts companies, museums and festivals.

He is the founder and producer of the Deadly Funny comedy festival, a platform championing the voices of Indigenous stand-up comedians. He is the co-producer of the Raw Comedy festival. As a cultural heritage officer for Indigenous nations in north-west Victoria, Tamiru would organise burial ceremonies and inter the remains back on Country. His experiences with the repatriation of ancestral remains formed the crux of the play, The Return (2022), which he co-directed. He has also served as Associate Producer of The Shadow King and produced Blak Cabaret.

Tamiru was born in Melbourne in 1974, where he continues to live and work.
