Artist and curator Peter Lewis focuses on researching the work of non-Western artists. He has initiated and led interdisciplinary courses in art, design, architecture and moving image that embed multiple practices in individual curatorial projects. He has curated numerous exhibitions, including /seconds, Sharjah Art Foundation (2014); UAE Pavilion, 26th São Paulo Biennial (2004); and Associate Curator, German Pavilion, 9th Venice Architecture Biennale (2004). He co-curated Sharjah Biennial 6 (2003) with Hoor Al Qasimi. Lewis is the editor of /seconds, an online project established in 2004, where he publishes curatorial research into contemporary practices in art. He has also written catalogues for biennials, including the Venice Architecture Biennale (2004); 26th Sao Paulo Biennial (2004); and Sharjah Biennial 6 (2003). His awards and fellowships include the Independent Researcher award for Leeds Beckett University’s Research Exercise Framework 2021 (2018); Generator 1 and 2 Arts Council England Award, Birmingham (2005–2007); Research Fellow, Art and Humanities Research Board, Leeds Beckett University (2004); and Glasgow City Council Award (1998). He is an independent researcher and Senior Lecturer for the MA Art and Design course at Leeds Beckett University. He also serves as a board member for Operational and Curatorial Research in Contemporary Art, Design, Science and Technology (OCR). Lewis holds a Diploma in Fine Art from St Martins School of Art, London (1972) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea School of Art, London (1973).
