Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), December 4, 2012 – Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) announces the March Meeting 2013 Open Call, welcoming proposals from individuals and institutions for presentations thematically relevant to Sharjah Biennial 11. The 6th annual March Meeting begins on the 14th until the 17th, during the opening week of SB11.
March Meeting will invite speakers to participate in a series of sessions and moderated panel discussions to reflect on and contextualise the theme of SB11. Yuko Hasegawa’s concept is inspired by the courtyard in Islamic architecture as a space that accumulates the memories of a local culture and facilitates the production of new knowledge through the exchanges and encounters it hosts.
Selected Open Call applicants will be invited to present on March 17, join other March Meeting events from March 14-17, as well as attend the SB11 opening on March 13.

March Meeting
March Meeting is an annual gathering of global art professionals and institutions concerned with the production and dissemination of art in the region. Launched in 2008, the Meeting was conceived as a forum to encourage regional art professionals to connect, share ideas and expertise, network and form partnerships for future projects.
Sharjah Biennial 11:
For Sharjah Biennial 11, Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (MOT), has selected artworks that explore the complexity and diversity of cultures and societies, spatial and political relations, notions of new forms of contacts, dialogue, and exchange, and the production through art and architectural practices of new ways of knowing, thinking and feeling. Hasegawa was inspired by the courtyard in Islamic architecture – in particular the historical courtyards of Sharjah – where elements of both public and private life intertwine, and where the objective political world and the introspective subjective space intersect and cross over.

Since 2009 SAF has built on the history of cultural collaboration and exchange that began with the first Sharjah Biennial in 1993.
