Sharjah Biennial 16

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
6 Febuary — 15 June 2025

Overview:

In this guided listening session, explore and appreciate the astonishing blends of influences and traditions in the four-track EP Sufi-Hispano Pakistani by Aziz Baloch (1910–1978). Republished in 2020 by the record label Death Is Not the End, this work stands as the only known recording and only surviving work of the mysterious cantaor [flamenco singer].

A distinguished musicologist and Sufi singer, Baloch sought to forge a connection between flamenco music from southern Spain and the musical traditions in his homeland of Sindh. To deepen his knowledge and mastery of flamenco, Baloch undertook the journey from British India to Spain, a path few others had ventured at the time. His pioneering efforts are encapsulated in his sole EP, Sufi-Hispano Pakistani, which was originally recorded and published in 1962.

All Sharjah Art Foundation events are free and open to the public.

Please note the session will be conducted in English.
