Overview

Sarat Maharaj is currently Professor of Visual Art and Knowledge Systems at Lund University and Malmö Art Academy, Sweden. He was Professor of Art History and Theory at Goldsmiths, University of London (1980-2005) where he is now Research Professor. He was Rudolf Arnheim Professor, Philosophy Faculty, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany (2001-02) and Research Fellow at the Jan Van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, The Netherlands (1999-2001). His research focuses on Marcel Duchamp, James Joyce and Richard Hamilton. Maharaj’s recent publications include The Sarat Maharaj Reader (Nanfang Daily Press, China, 2010); ‘Small Change of the Universal’: Beyond Modernity? (British Journal of Sociology, 2010); ‘Hungry Clouds Swag on the Deep’: Santu Mofokeng at Kassel 2002: Chasing Shadows, Prestel, 2011. He was co-curator of Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany (2002). With Richard Hamilton, he curated retinal.optical.visual.conceptual., at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2002). He was the chief curator of Pandemonium: Art in a Time of Creativity Fever, Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden (2011). He was co-curator of Art, Knowledge and Politics, São Paulo Biennale, Brazil (2010) and Farewell to Postcolonialism. Guangzhou Triennial, China (2008). He is on the curatorial team of the ‘BRICS’ project – the rise of ‘Non-Western Modernities’ and Beyond? (2013-2015).
