In this workshop, Expanding the Studio to the Bazaar, Pop South Asia: Artistic Explorations in the Popular artists Seher Naveed and Saba Khan introduce students from the College of Fine Arts and Design, University of Sharjah, to ways they can draw on the bazaar and informal markets for the production of artwork. Students will learn how to present their ideas through alternative materials and popular imagery, extending their notions of aesthetics beyond those of the western art canon.

Students will bring 10 to 20 photographs, taken with either a camera or mobile phone, that they think represent Pop culture around Sharjah and Dubai. To recreate their experience of living in an urban environment, they will arrange and combine their photos with alternative materials such as crystals, sequins, beads and stickers from local markets. Students may also utilise acrylic paint, pencils and markers to complete their work on a canvas of approximately 12 x 18 inches.

The day will start with a reading from Punjabi Baroque and Other Memories of Architecture by Gautam Bhatia, followed by a discussion.
