Overview

Cairo-based music composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nancy Mounir leads a performance of Nozhet El Nofous [Promenade of the Souls], based on her 2022 album of the same name, six years in the making.

The project may be seen as duet of sorts: both a conversation with and a questioning of archival recordings nearly one hundred years old. Navigating the nuanced landscapes of 1920s Egyptian artists, Mounir on violin and theremin, along with an ensemble of other instrumentalists, reinvigorates the voices of once-celebrated artists such as Mounira El Mahdiyya and Abdellatif El Banna, who have now faded into obscurity.

A fusion of cultural memory and artistic innovation, Nozhet El Nofous weaves together archival recordings with live, immersive audiovisual experiences—both music and spoken word—to create a tapestry of sound that challenges and delights today’s sensibilities.

Through her music, Mounir not only revives a rich legacy but also pioneers a vibrant future for Arabic musical expression.
