Synopsis

Sharjah Art Foundation Production Programme recipient Rula Halawani will speak about her artistic career, demonstrating how life under the occupation of Palestine has influenced her professional journey from mathematician to photojournalist to artist. Her experiences in the midst of a volatile political situation have played a tremendous role in articulating her career.

In addition to speaking about the context of her work, Halawani will discuss her photography process, experimentation, techniques and her current project, The Bride is Beautiful But She Is Married to Another Man.

Biography

Rula Halawani was born in 1964 and is currently based in Jerusalem. Halawani’s photographs are part of the international collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Nadour Collection, Germany; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; British Museum, London; Khalid Shoman Foundation, Amman and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
 
Halawani holds a Bachelor of Art in Advanced Photography, University of Saskatchewan, Canada (1989) and a Master of Art in Photographic Studies, University of Westminster, London (2001). In 2016, Halawani received a residency fellowship at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France. In addition to her artistic practice, she was founding director and associate professor in the Photography Programme, Birzeit University (2001-2015).
